Meteorological Balloons Employed to Contraband Cigarettes Shut Down Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
A minimum of 11 of the meteorological balloons, transporting thousands of packs of illegal cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

Illegal Goods Seizure

At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."

Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.

Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
